'Palestinians' caught in a lie

On Sunday, JPost reported that the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe denied a request for observer status from the 'Palestinian Authority.'

Twenty-eight countries voted against the Palestinian request and 21 voted in favor of accepting the application, according to the report.

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon told Army Radio Sunday that Israeli diplomatic efforts played a role in thwarting the Palestinian application. The Foreign Ministry noted that the United States, Germany and Italy opposed the application.

Turkey also voted against the application, something the Foreign Ministry said could be a sign of improved relations with Ankara, according to the report.

On Sunday, the 'Palestinians' denied ever applying to join the OSCE.

President Mahmoud Abbas' diplomatic adviser denied on Sunday reports in Israeli media that Palestine had tried to join the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.

"Joining the organization is not one of the Palestinian Authority’s priorities," Majdi al-Khalidi told Ma'an.

For good measure, Turkey denied voting against the purportedly non-existent application.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry has denied reports in the Israeli media that Turkey voted against an Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) resolution allowing the Palestinian authority to join the organization as an observer.

“It is true that the bid was rejected at the end of the meeting. But the Turkish delegation didn't vote against the bid. On the contrary, Turkey's attitude is positive,” the diplomat told Today's Zaman on Monday.

The Palestinian administration clarified that it did not introduce the resolution in the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. A Palestinian official in Ankara told Today's Zaman that the Palestinian Authority could not propose such a measure because it is not an OSCE member state but added that the resolution could have been introduced by a member state.

The Palestinian Authority also said it did not pursue joining the OSCE. "Joining the organization is not one of the Palestinian Authority's priorities," Majdi al-Khalidi, the diplomatic advisor for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, told Palestinian news agency Ma'an on Sunday.

The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Committee on Political Affairs and Security on Saturday rejected a resolution that would have called for enlarging the OSCE partnership with Mediterranean States to include the Palestinian National Authority. The committee vote was: 22 in favor, 28 against with 7 abstentions. A simple majority was needed for passage.

The Palestinian Authority requested in 2004 to be included in the OSCE partnership. Only a decision of the OSCE's Permanent Council could grant that requests -- and on that governmental side question, you should direct your questions back to Vienna OSCE.

Last year a similar measure failed before the same Parliamentary Assembly committee.
